Lesson 13 of 25 · 6 min

Settlement mechanics

Settlement is a discounted recovery of a claim, not a vanished balance and not a recommendation.

Settlement, as a mechanism, is a discounted recovery of a claim. A stated amount is paid. A larger face is not collected. Track 1 lesson 2 priced recovery as costly; a discount from face is that cost in reverse: less than par is taken because collecting par has a cost. Naming the mechanism is not a recommendation to settle, and not a recommendation not to.

Marrow Street Recovery's invented unsecured book after the charge-off. Face is $9,180. A settlement at 40 cents on the dollar is $9,180 × 0.40 = $3,672 paid. Not collected is $9,180 − $3,672 = $5,508. The $3,672 is cash that arrived. The $5,508 is face that did not. Whether that $5,508 is later characterized as something else is the next lesson. This one is only the split.

Ashmere Collections' 8-cent basis from lesson 10 is a different denominator again. Forty cents on face is a recovery rate against $9,180. Eight cents was a purchase price against a different book. The two cents figures are not a pair. Settlement is a transaction on the claim, not a restatement of what a buyer once paid. Rules on how a settlement is treated vary, and a reader's own situation belongs with a qualified professional.

Forty cents on $9,180 is $3,672 paid and $5,508 not collected. That is a discounted recovery. It is not an instruction. Rules vary; a reader's own situation belongs with a qualified professional.
