Lesson 19 of 25 · 7 min
What "no news" between statements is not
Silence is not a flat line: interest posts every day and Calder prints whether a letter arrives or not.
No letter in a week is not evidence that the loan sat still. The daily increment on the March close is $372.75. Seven silent days are $2,609.22 of balance and $3,727.46 of trigger before any last sale moves. Calder can print $12.40 lower on one of those days and take 3,100 × $12.40 = $38,440 off the book without generating a page. Silence is the absence of a document. It is not the absence of either path.
What "no news" is not, item by item: it is not a zero accrual; it is not an unchanged book; it is not a confirmation that advance rates held; it is not a confirmation that units held; it is not a passing test restated. It is the interval in which those quantities continue to exist without being typeset. Lesson 3 named the two movers. This lesson is the reading of a week in which neither mover produces an envelope.
A reconstruction of a silent week is therefore the same weekly method as lesson 12, applied when the inbox is empty. The empty inbox is an input of zero new documents. It is not an input of zero new interest and zero new last sales. Treating it as the second kind of zero is how a running LTV inherits last month's close as if the month had not started.
The figure that moves between statements keeps moving when no statement is written. Silence withholds the confirmation, not the increment.
Key terms
- Documentary silence
- A stretch with no new letter. It reports nothing about accrual, last sales, units, or haircuts.
- Flat-line reading
- Treating an empty inbox as an unchanged loan. It freezes both the balance path and the book path at the last typeset row.
Worked example
A silent week after 31 March
No April letter. Rate still 7.22 percent Act/360. One day Calder prints $581.15 against $593.55. Other rows unchanged.
- Seven days of interest
- $2,609.22
- Trigger movement from interest
- $3,727.46
- Calder print-day move
- −$38,440
- Documents received
- 0
- Quantities that moved
- 2
Not zero.
3,100 × ($581.15 − $593.55).
Balance path and book path.
Zero letters is not zero movement. The week still contains $2,609.22 of interest and, on this illustration, $38,440 of Calder.
Check yourself
Seven days pass after the March close. No letter arrives. Interest is still 7.22 percent Act/360 and Calder prints $12.40 lower. Which statement is true?
- Nothing has moved, because nothing was written
- Only Calder has moved, because interest waits for a letter
- The balance has moved by $2,609.22 and the book has moved by −$38,440
- Advance rates have been confirmed by the silence
