Lesson 3 of 25 · 6 min

What 60 days typically triggers

Sixty days is a second failed test, often the point a spread is revised on the same balance.

Sixty days is the second named bucket on the same clock. A second miss has now occurred. On Pellbridge Servicing's invented car book, two $40 late fees sit on two $466.02 installments, so $80 of fees are standing. The fees are still charges on installments. The new machine at this age, on some agreements, is a penalty rate: a spread that steps up because the borrower failed a second test.

Take the Track 24 card. A carried $4,280 at an illustrative 21.99 percent has a monthly twelfth of $4,280 × 0.2199 ÷ 12 = $78.43. Some agreements permit a step to 29.99 percent after two buckets. Monthly interest becomes $4,280 × 0.2999 ÷ 12 = $106.96. Extra is $28.53 a month. The $4,280 did not move. The index, if there was one, did not have to move. The spread moved because a clocked test failed twice.

Track 1 lesson 13 is index plus spread. The spread is the lender's margin, and it can move for reasons that have nothing to do with the index. A penalty step is that move pointed at a person: the same balance, a larger spread, a larger monthly product. Rules on when a penalty rate may be applied vary, and a reader's own situation belongs with a qualified professional.

Two buckets, two $40 fees, and on the card a spread that stepped from 21.99 percent to 29.99 percent. The principal is still $4,280. The extra $28.53 is the revised spread.

Worked example

Two fees, and a spread that stepped

Illustrative figures scaled down so the arithmetic is followable; they are not the reported amounts. Two $40 car fees. Card balance $4,280 stepping from 21.99 percent to 29.99 percent.

Two car late fees
$80

Two × $40.

Monthly interest at 21.99%
$78.43

$4,280 × 0.2199 ÷ 12.

Monthly interest at 29.99%
$106.96

$4,280 × 0.2999 ÷ 12.

Extra each month
$28.53

$106.96 − $78.43.

What did not move
The $4,280

The spread moved.

Sixty days priced $80 of car fees and, on the card, an extra $28.53 a month from an eight-point step on an unchanged $4,280.
