Lesson 4 of 25 · 7 min

What 90 days typically triggers

Ninety days is one label on three recovery clocks, and those clocks are already running.

Ninety days is the third named bucket on the same household clock. A third miss has now occurred. What is already running underneath that one label depends on the collateral. Track 1 lesson 2 is the point: recovery speed is what the lender priced on day one. Three products, three speeds, one 90-day name.

On unsecured balances, a charge-off review window commonly sits around 120 to 180 days. Ninety is inside the approach to that window, not the write-off itself. On a car, Track 22 lesson 23 already showed a taking that can complete in weeks: by day 90 a repossession path can already be in motion. On a house, Track 23 lesson 24 already showed a foreclosure clock measured in months: by day 90 the house is usually still on that longer path, not at a sale. The 90-day label is one age. The three recoveries are three clocks.

Nothing in that split is a live rate of delinquency, repossession or foreclosure. It is a ranking of recovery speeds that were priced when each facility was written. Rules that govern taking, sale, charge-off and foreclosure vary by state, and a reader's own situation belongs with a qualified professional.

One 90-day label, three recovery clocks, as mechanics:

  • Unsecured: a charge-off review often still weeks away, commonly around 120 to 180 days. Practices vary.
  • Car: a repossession path can already be running. Track 22 lesson 23 is weeks, not months.
  • House: a foreclosure clock is usually still measured in months. Track 23 lesson 24 is that longer path.

Ninety days is an age. Recovery speed is a property of the collateral. The rules vary by state. A reader's own situation belongs with a qualified professional.

Worked example

One age, three clocks

Illustrative figures scaled down so the arithmetic is followable; they are not the reported amounts. Day 90 on an unsecured card, a car, and a house, each on its own recovery clock. Rules vary by state.

90 days

The third bucket on the household clock.

Unsecured review
Still approaching 120–180 days

A write-off window, not a taking.

Car path
Can already be in motion

Track 22 lesson 23: weeks.

House path
Usually still in months

Track 23 lesson 24.

What this is not
A live rate

Check yourself

At the 90-day bucket, what is already typically running on an unsecured balance, on a car, and on a house, and who does a reader's own situation belong with?

Ninety days is when three different recovery clocks are often already running, the everyday version of Track 1 lesson 2: recovery speed is what the lender priced. Open Why a lender lends against securities at all →
