Lesson 25 of 25 · 8 min
What the statement taught you and what it hid
The page is complete as a period summary and incomplete as a risk document, and those are different jobs.
The March statement taught a closed month. It named the parties, the facility, the 31 days, the two stated rates, the two legs, the capitalised close, the five-row table, the 54.32% blend, the 30.81% LTV, the $552,780.00 undrawn line, and a 70% market-value threshold. Every one of those figures had a parent identity or a printed source. A reader who formed the pairs knows that this page is internally consistent.
What it hid is a short list, and the list is structural. Trigger $2,655,090.67 and headroom $3,377,704.33 (55.99%) are computable and unprinted. LTV on lending value, 56.71% at the close, is a true ratio on a basis this threshold does not use, and it is unprinted. February's $9,959.99 path is on another page. Intra-month marks, including any day Calder's $1,840,005.00 was lower, are on no page in this track. Discretion — demand, regrade, sale, notice — is in the agreement, quantified as a power and not as a size.
Taught, in one column of facts; hidden, in the other:
- Taught: 11 days at 6.97% and 20 days at 7.22% produced $3,934.07 and $7,409.40.
- Taught: Calder is $1,840,005.00 of market value and $644,001.75 of lending value, 30.50% and 19.65% of those books.
- Hidden: the market value at which 70% is met, and the percent-of-book fall that reaches it.
- Hidden: whether 35% on Calder is the schedule, a concentration overlay, or a revision, and whether it will still be 35% in April.
- Hidden: the highest LTV reached on any day between 1 and 31 March.
Those two columns are not a verdict on the facility. They are a description of a document type. A period summary closes a ledger. A risk document would print a trigger, a headroom, a path, and a rights schedule. This page was built to do the first job thoroughly — more thoroughly than many live statements — and the second job not at all. Reading it well is knowing which job you have just watched it finish, and which job you have just watched it decline.
Key terms
- Period summary
- A document whose job is to close a window: opening, movements, close, period-end marks. This statement is one.
- Risk document
- A document whose job is to state distance to a test, a path inside the window, and the rights that can move the inputs. This statement is not one.
- Structural omission
- A missing figure that is missing because of the document type, not because a row failed to print. Trigger, headroom and intra-month path are structural here.
Worked example
What one close both shows and withholds
The 31 March close, after a full walk of the page.
- What the close taught
- $1,858,563.47 = $1,847,220.00 + $11,343.47
- What the table taught about Calder
- $1,840,005.00 at 35% = $644,001.75; 30.50% of market, 19.65% of lending
- What the foot taught
- LTV 30.81% against 70% of market value
- What the same close hid as a trigger
- $2,655,090.67
- What it hid as headroom
- $3,377,704.33, 55.99%
- What no section taught
- 12 March's intra-day marks, or a reserved right's size
The page finished the month. It did not finish the test the month is governed by. Those are different completions, and only one of them is the statement's job.
Check yourself
After reading the March statement, which three facts do you now know from the page itself, and which two facts that the maintenance test uses did the page refuse to print?
